Age Appropriate Chores

Starting about age 2, most people start to ask their children for help tidying
up their “lived in” home. It is important to ask your children to do chores
that are appropriate for their age group to set them up for success.

Age appropriate chores for children ages 2 to 3 are:

  • Put toys where they belong
  • Fill dog/cat food bowl
  • Fill dog/cat water bowl
  • Put clothes in hamper
  • Wipe up spills
  • Dust (Pro Tip: Dust with a very slightly damp cloth so that dust sticks to cloth.)
  • Put like things in piles (such as books and magazines)
  • Potty training

Age appropriate chores for children ages 4 to 5 are:

  • All of the above age 2 to 3 chores
  • Fix bowl of breakfast cereal
  • Make their bed
  • Empty trash cans
  • Bring in mail and/or newspaper
  • Clear kitchen table
  • Pull weeds when weather permits
  • Use hand-held vacuum to pick up crumbs
  • Unload utensils from dishwasher
  • Wash plastic dishes at sink

Age appropriate chores for children ages 6 to 7 are:

  • All of the above age 4 to 5 chores
  • Dentists recommended that children start brushing their own teeth around age 6. You can add it to the chore list so you can encourage and reward this good behavior.
  • Sort clean laundry
  • Sweep floors
  • Set and clear kitchen table
  • Help prepare and pack bagged lunch
  • Weed and rake leaves
  • Water plants
  • Keep bedroom tidy

Age appropriate chores for children ages 8 to 9 are:

  • All of the above age 6 to 7 chores
  • Load/unload dishwasher
  • Put away groceries
  • Vacuum carpets
  • Help make dinner
  • Make own snacks
  • Wash table after meals
  • Put away own laundry
  • Clean up after bath
  • You can encourage use of deodorant by making it a chore and rewarding it.
  • Sew buttons
  • Make own breakfast
  • Peel vegetables
  • Help pack lunch (get lunch box; put napkin, water bottle, and fruit inside)
  • Take trash/recycling to curb (and bring back the next day)
  • Cook simple foods, such as toaster foods like bagels and waffles
  • Mop floor
  • Take small dog for a walk
  • Play with dog outside (Dog Exercise)

Age appropriate chores for children ages 10 to 11 are:

  • All of the above age 8 to 9 chores
  • Unload dishwasher and put away dishes
  • Fold clean laundry
  • Clean bathroom
  • Wash windows
  • Wash a car
  • Cook simple meal with supervision
  • Iron clothes with supervision
  • Do laundry
  • Skim the pool
  • Clean kitchen
  • Cleaning litter box
  • Change their bed sheets

Age appropriate chores for children ages 12+ are:

  • All of the above age 10 to 11 chores
  • Assist in household projects/repairs (painting, etc.)
  • Do more difficult cleaning projects (scrubbing kitchen floor, windows)
  • Feeding baby and younger siblings.
